Group preparing for rib safety briefing shark diving adventure Protea Banks

Proper weighting is one of the most important safety factors in scuba diving. Before diving Protea Banks, we strongly recommend using our dive weight calculator to estimate your correct ballast and ensure safe, controlled buoyancy throughout the dive.

Diving Safety at Protea Banks

Diving at Protea Banks is an advanced offshore experience that rewards good preparation, awareness, and disciplined diving practices. African Dive Adventures operates with a safety-first philosophy built on clear communication, experienced leadership, and conservative decision-making.

Our goal is simple: to provide calm, well-managed dives in an environment where big-animal encounters occur naturally. Safety is never treated as a formality — it is integrated into every stage of our operation.

Pre-Dive Safety Procedures

Every dive begins with a structured pre-dive briefing designed to ensure all divers understand the plan, the conditions, and their individual responsibilities. Briefings are concise, clear, and adapted to the day’s conditions.

  • Site overview, including expected depth ranges and current direction
  • Entry and exit procedures
  • Group separation and rendezvous protocols
  • Surface marker buoy (SMB) deployment requirements
  • Hand signals and guide positioning

Equipment checks are encouraged before every launch. Divers are expected to arrive with well-maintained, appropriate equipment suited to offshore conditions, including a DSMB and audible signalling device.

In-Water Safety Practices

Diving at Protea Banks requires situational awareness and disciplined buoyancy control. Currents, depth, and visibility can vary between dives, and divers are expected to remain within their training and experience limits.

  • Strong emphasis on buddy awareness and cohesion
  • Controlled descents and ascents
  • Depth awareness and gas management
  • Calm, predictable movement around sharks and other marine life

While dive guides are present in the water, they do not replace the diver’s responsibility for personal safety. This approach aligns well with BSAC and club-based diving principles, where divers are trained to be self-reliant and aware.

Surface & Boat Safety

Our surface operations are managed by experienced skippers familiar with the local sea state, weather patterns, and offshore conditions. Launches and recoveries are conducted from approved launch sites under controlled procedures.

  • Clear diver roll-call systems before and after every dive
  • Continuous surface monitoring during dives
  • Prompt and controlled diver recovery
  • Close coordination between skipper and dive guides

Conditions are continuously assessed throughout the day. Dives may be delayed, modified, or cancelled if conditions change — a decision always taken in the interest of diver safety.

Emergency Preparedness

African Dive Adventures maintains clear emergency action procedures appropriate to offshore diving operations. These procedures are regularly reviewed and communicated to staff.

  • Emergency oxygen available on board
  • First-aid equipment suitable for diving operations
  • Established communication protocols
  • Clear evacuation and response planning

While incidents are rare, preparedness ensures that any situation is handled quickly, calmly, and effectively. Divers are encouraged to disclose any relevant medical considerations in advance so that appropriate planning can take place.

Diver Experience & Suitability

Protea Banks diving is best suited to experienced and confident divers who are comfortable in blue-water environments and variable conditions.

  • Advanced certification or equivalent experience recommended
  • Comfort with negative entries and mid-water ascents
  • Experience deploying DSMBs from depth
  • Good physical fitness and situational awareness

If you are unsure whether this type of diving is suitable, we encourage an open discussion prior to booking. Honest communication ensures that every diver has an experience that is both safe and enjoyable.

Dive With Confidence

Safety at Protea Banks is not about restriction — it is about preparation, respect for the environment, and professional execution. Our systems are designed to allow divers to focus on the experience while knowing that every aspect of the dive is well managed.
