Protea Banks Dive Calendar

Protea Banks offers some of the most exciting shark diving in the world, with conditions and species encounters changing throughout the year. Understanding seasonal patterns allows divers to plan trips that best match their experience level, interests, and expectations.

This dive calendar provides a clear, month-by-month overview of water temperature, visibility, sea conditions, and shark activity, helping divers and dive clubs choose the optimal time to visit.

How Seasonal Diving at Protea Banks Works

Protea Banks lies offshore of South Africa’s east coast and is influenced by the warm Agulhas Current. Seasonal changes affect water temperature, visibility, and the presence of pelagic species.

Unlike many destinations, Protea Banks offers year-round diving. However, different months favour different experiences — from warm-water tiger shark encounters to cooler-water schooling hammerheads.

Month-by-Month Dive Overview

January – March (Mid to Late Summer)

These months offer the warmest water temperatures, often ranging from 24–27°C. Visibility is generally good, and tiger sharks are frequently encountered.

  • Water temperature: Warm
  • Shark highlights: Tiger sharks, blacktips
  • Conditions: Blue water, occasional surface swell

April – May (Autumn Transition)

Conditions remain favourable, with slightly cooler water and stable seas. This period is popular with photographers due to improved visibility and comfortable diving conditions.

  • Water temperature: Mild
  • Shark highlights: Tigers, raggies beginning to appear
  • Conditions: Generally calm

June – August (Winter)

Winter brings cooler water, typically between 18–22°C, and the possibility of large schooling hammerheads. These months suit experienced divers comfortable with blue-water ascents and thermoclines.

  • Water temperature: Cool
  • Shark highlights: Hammerheads, ragged-tooth sharks
  • Conditions: Variable visibility, rewarding encounters

September – October (Spring)

As water temperatures begin to rise, visibility often improves and pelagic activity increases. This is a strong all-round period for diving.

  • Water temperature: Moderate
  • Shark highlights: Mixed species
  • Conditions: Improving seas

November – December (Early Summer)

Early summer marks the return of warmer water and an increase in tiger shark sightings. These months are popular with both independent divers and club groups.

  • Water temperature: Warming
  • Shark highlights: Tiger sharks, blacktips
  • Conditions: Generally good

Peak Shark Seasons

While sharks can be seen throughout the year, certain species are more likely during specific seasons.

  • Tiger Sharks: November to May
  • Hammerheads: June to August
  • Ragged-Tooth Sharks: Winter months
  • Blacktip Sharks: Summer and transitional seasons

Encounters are always natural and unpredictable — seasonal patterns increase likelihood, but every dive is unique.

The Sardine Run Window

The annual Sardine Run typically occurs between June and July, though exact timing varies each year. This phenomenon attracts a wide range of marine life, including sharks, dolphins, and seabirds.

Sardine Run diving is dynamic and best suited to experienced divers who are comfortable in changing conditions. While not guaranteed, it remains one of the most dramatic marine events on Earth.

Weather & Sea Conditions

Offshore conditions are influenced by swell, wind, and currents. Dives are planned conservatively, and schedules may adjust to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences.

  • Currents can vary in strength and direction
  • Visibility changes with plankton and water movement
  • Thermoclines are common in winter months
