🦈 Do I need to be an advanced diver for Protea Banks?
Yes. Protea Banks is a deep drift dive with changing currents. You must be PADI Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) and comfortable descending to 28–35m. Recent diving experience is strongly recommended.
🌊 How strong are the currents?
Currents vary daily, from gentle drifts to fast-moving water. Our guides manage all descents and ascents, and full briefings are given before the dive. We only launch in safe conditions.
📅 What time do we launch?
Launch times depend on tides, wind and swell. Most dives launch between 7:00 and 11:00 AM. You will receive confirmation the day before.
🐟 What sharks can we expect to see?
Protea Banks is home to Bull Sharks, Blacktips, Scalloped Hammerheads, Tiger Sharks (in season), and occasional Giant Guitar Sharks. Sightings vary with the season and conditions.
🪝 Is baited diving available?
Yes. The Baited Shark Dive is available as a premium add-on (R1,950). This controlled surface-led experience offers close-range encounters with Bull & Tiger Sharks.
🤿 Can I rent equipment?
Yes. Full gear rental is available from R450. Nitrox 32% fills are also available for an additional cost.
🚙 Do you offer transport to the dive shop?
No, transport is not included. Divers must make their own way to the shop at Shelly Beach.
📸 Can I bring a camera?
Absolutely — Protea Banks is one of the best shark photography locations in the world. We recommend action cameras, GoPros or full rigs with strobes for deeper reefs.
🌦 What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions are unsafe, we will postpone, reschedule or refund. Safety always comes first, and we follow the official launch control decisions.
📞 Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Protea Banks can be busy in peak season and shark season. We recommend booking at least 2–4 days ahead.
